Lyon Surprises the World By Defeating Manchester City and Reaching Semi Finals

LISBON, Portugal – the soccer world was shocked on August 15 2020 by the upset when Olympique Lyonnais defeated Manchester City with a score of 3-1 and went through to the semifinals of the champions league.

Before that Lyon was victorious against Juventus which was the winner of Serie A title. They had beaten Juventus with an aggregate of 3-3 by scoring an away goal. Even Ronaldo’s penalty and stunner goal were not able to stop Lyon from reaching quarter-finals.

The first goal of the match was scored by Lyon when they took the lead and Maxwel Cornet’s creative finish put them on the scorecard. The goal was scored at a 24-minute mark.

Manchester City builds the pressure in the second half and cornered the Lyon side. It worked in favor of City when Kevin de Bruyne leveled the score by putting the ball in the goal in a cool way.

But then Moussa Dembele was substituted and he crushed all the hopes that Manchester City had of Qualifying for the seifinals. His first goal was brilliant when his fellow player offsite so he left the ball for Dembele and Manchester city’s defenders were totally confused by this play.

Dembele was left alone with the keeper and he calmly finished as goalkeeper tried to stop it but it deflected into the goal. The third goal for Lyon as they were passing the ball beautifully and Dembele scored his second goal in the 86th minute and it was finished for Manchester City.

Manchester City had the best of the possession of the ball but they were unable to create any chances. The players were hurt after the defeat and some were even seen crying. Rahim sterling was laying on the ground for a minute in the shock of defeat. Lyon players were celebrating as it was a great achievement for them after they ended 7th place in the French league, they were happy to reach the semi-final of the champions league.

Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes said while talking to media:

“It’s incredible because we’re the surprise team,”. “I don’t think many people expected us to reach this stage of the competition.”

Lyon coach Rudi Garcia said:

“We won the tactical battle as we master our system of play,”

This was a good opportunity for Manchester City to win the Champions League because the big guns like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus were out of the competition.

De Bruyne said in an interview:

“This team is great,”, “but we make too many mistakes.”
